BORA is an outdoor wall light from the Spanish brand Mantra – a flat square plate 15 × 15 cm in a rust-coloured corten finish, standing clear of the wall on a round spacer. It lights around its edge, not through its face The front of the plate is solid and stays dark. The light escapes through the gap all around it, between plate and wall, and lays a square halo on the render – upwards, downwards and sideways. The fitting does not shine into your eyes and does not dazzle anyone walking past; you see the effect on the masonry, not the source. It is made for façades, terraces and boundary walls, where the point is to mark a surface rather than light the ground. Corten without the rust The finish is called corten – it imitates weathering steel in RAL 8028, a warm brick-rust brown. It is only a coating, though: the fitting does not corrode and does not stain the wall with run-off the way real corten does. Mantra offers the same model in white and dark grey, and as a round version under reference 6538. 720 lumens from 9.6 W The built-in LED module gives 720 lm at 9.6 W, about 75 lm/W. The 3000 K colour is warm white – against brick, timber or a warm-toned render it looks natural, unlike cool light, which flattens such materials. Colour rendering is CRI 80, rated life 60,000 hours and 30,000 switching cycles. The fitting is not dimmable. IP54 – what that means outdoors IP54 protects against dust in quantities that would impair operation and against splashing water from any direction – enough for rain and snow on a vertical wall, with or without an overhang. It is not resistance to a pressurised hose jet, so do not clean it with a pressure washer. Protection class I means an earth conductor must be connected. Supply is 220–240 V, 50/60 Hz.
