Etoile in size M is a pendant 65.4 cm tall and 17.8 cm across, finished in aged brass. The inside of the metal shade is covered in gold leaf, and beneath it, on the shade's axis, hangs a star-shaped element — hence the name (French étoile). The design is Elstead Lighting's; the shade is steel and the star resin. The gilded interior changes the colour of the light The gold leaf inside the shade is not simply an ornament you cannot see. Light from the lamp reflects off it before leaving the fitting and emerges noticeably warmer than from a white or chrome shade. Over a table that gives a soft golden pool rather than a neutral white one — closer to candlelight than to an office lamp. The star below the shade cuts across the beam, casting a fine shadow pattern on the surface. Drop adjustable from 65 to 157 cm The cord is 91.4 cm long and the manufacturer quotes a total drop range of 65.4 - 156.8 cm. That is ninety centimetres of freedom: over a kitchen island the pendant can hang low, in a dining room with a high ceiling it can be raised. The height is set during installation by shortening the cord. E27 socket — lamp bought separately The fitting has one E27 socket rated at a maximum of 60 W and ships without a lamp. The choice of bulb matters here: the shade is open at the bottom, so the lamp is partly visible from the side. A decorative bulb with a visible filament reinforces the character of the piece, while an opal one gives softer, glare-free light. The fitting places no restriction on dimming — with dimmable lamps it will work on a dimmer. Installation and figures The ceiling pan is brass, matched to the body. The fitting is Class I and needs an earth conductor; supply is 220-240 V at 50 Hz. It is for interior use only. It weighs 1.5 kg net and 1.8 kg in a carton measuring 43 x 31 x 23.5 cm.
