RIO BIO 78 is a chandelier designed to be part alive. A black ring 78 cm across carries a downward-facing LED strip, and the inside of that ring is shaped to hold plants — trailing over the edge, they give the fitting its final form. Thoro describes the model as a crossing of two of its own designs: the openwork KUKKIA and the classic RIO chandelier. Light and greenery in one fitting Instead of hanging a planter beside a lamp, you get one object doing both jobs. The light points down, so a table or island top is lit directly, while the foliage hanging from the ring stays in soft reflected light. This is biophilic design — treating planting as part of the architecture rather than an accessory placed afterwards. Light quality: CRI 93 A colour rendering index of 93 sits well above the market standard (typical domestic fittings manage 80). In practice the green of the leaves, the tone of timber and the colour of food on a plate read as they would in daylight, without a grey or yellow cast. At 3000 K the light stays warm, and 4370 lm from 33 W is enough to serve as the main source in a dining room or living room. Mounting and proportion The chandelier hangs on adjustable cables up to 200 cm below the ceiling — over a table they are usually shortened so the bottom of the ring sits 70–80 cm above the top. The 18.5 cm canopy in black and the transparent cable keep the suspension discreet. At 3.8 kg and 78 cm across it needs a ceiling that will take a solid fixing, and in a room under 250 cm high the fitting plus its plants will start to crowd the headroom. Control options, made to order As standard the fitting has a single output. Thoro also builds it with a remote, app control, DALI or PUSH DIMM — an option ordered separately, and worth settling before purchase since it cannot be added later. Manufacture and warranty The lamp is made in Poland and carries a five-year manufacturer's warranty — twice the two years usual in this class.
