Ren is a chandelier 914 mm across in which five arms end in teardrop shades - matte black outside, lined with gold inside. Each cradles a faux-alabaster globe that diffuses the lamp behind it and glows softly on its own, like stone lit from within. The design is by Lisa McDennon for the American brand Hinkley; Quintiesse brings it to the European market. Six light sources, not five The name says five lights, but the fitting has one more, hidden: a LED downlight is concealed in the central column of the chandelier. The five arms run 3 W G9 lamps at 300 lm each, and the central downlight runs a 7 W GU10 LED. Together that comes to 2120 lm - enough for the chandelier to light a table on its own, with no supporting fittings. The division of labour is clear: the shades set the mood and throw light sideways, while the downlight sends its beam straight down onto the tabletop. Lamps included Quintiesse supplies all six sources in the box - five dimmable 3 W G9 LED lamps at 3000 K and one 7 W GU10 LED. Nothing needs buying at installation. The wattage equivalent quoted by the manufacturer is 28 W for the G9s and 50 W for the GU10, so in brightness terms this matches old incandescent lamps totalling nearly 200 W. Colour rendering is CRI 80 and the rated lamp life is 25,000 hours. Dimming The supplied G9 lamps are dimmable and the manufacturer explicitly allows the fitting to run on a wall dimmer - the dimmer is not included and has to be allowed for in the wiring. Over a dining table that matters: the same fitting can give a full 2120 lm for a meal and a low glow for conversation. Suspension and installation The chandelier hangs on rigid rods, not on cable. Three rods are supplied: two of 305 mm and one of 152 mm, which can be combined. That gives a drop of between 533 and 1142 mm, fixed once at installation - the height cannot be changed later without taking the fitting down again. The ceiling pan is only 127 mm across and 29 mm high, so it is discreet, but it will not cover a large existing ceiling opening. The fitting weighs 11.7 kg net and is hard-wired to a 220-240 V supply; installation is a job for a qualified electrician. Class I means a protective earth conductor must be connected. Service and use The alabaster shades carry their own spare part number - GS1026 - so breaking one does not mean replacing the whole chandelier. The fitting is for dry interiors only. The manufacturer gives a two-year general guarantee. The carton measures 84 x 84 x 40.5 cm and weighs 13 kg gross, worth checking if the fitting has to travel by lift or up a narrow staircase.
