KUKKIA is a pendant light that doubles as a planter. Four steel tubes stand on a rectangular black frame measuring 142 × 62 cm: each takes a plant pot from above and conceals a downward-facing GU10 lampholder below. The name is Finnish for "flower", but the design is entirely Polish — by the interior architect Łukasz Kwietniewski, and manufactured by Thoro in Poland. How it works The frame hangs on four cables gathered into a narrow black canopy, with a total drop of 150 cm. The four tubes sit symmetrically around the frame so that light falls in four separate cones onto a table top or an island. The plants stay above the light source and remain visible at eye level — the reverse of a conventional pendant, where nothing happens above the shade. The manufacturer is unambiguous about the distribution: the fitting emits downwards only. It lights neither the plants nor the ceiling — this is task light over a table, with the greenery playing a decorative rather than a horticultural role. That matters when choosing species: pick plants that tolerate ordinary room light rather than ones that need supplementary lighting. Materials and finish The structure combines steel and aluminium, powder-coated in matt black — the same black covers frame, tubes, canopy and cables, so the fitting reads as a single line drawn in the air. Powder coating is considerably more scratch-resistant than sprayed lacquer, which counts on a fitting whose pots have to be reached regularly. Thoro states that Polish steel and aluminium are used and that production is entirely domestic. Size — check before ordering 142 cm long and 62 cm wide is substantially larger than a typical over-table fitting. It is intended for a long dining table or a kitchen island of at least the same length; over a 120 cm top it will overhang the edge. Its 9.6 kg call for fixing into a structural ceiling or a properly prepared suspended-ceiling frame — this is not a fitting to hang from a plasterboard sheet on an ordinary plug. Lamps The four GU10 sockets take lamps of up to 10 W each. Lamps are not supplied — they are chosen separately, which lets colour temperature and output be matched to the room. Over a table, 2700–3000 K lamps with a beam of about 36° work well, producing concentrated pools on the surface; a wider beam blurs the effect of four separate cones on which the whole composition depends. Installation and safety The fitting runs on a 230 V / 50 Hz supply. It is protection class I, so the installation requires an earth conductor — in older buildings with no earth at the ceiling box, a condition to verify before buying. An IP20 rating places it in dry interiors.
