The Origami Bowl is cast from recycled glass into a faceted, many-sided body that echoes a folded sheet of paper. The glass is transparent with the cool blue-green cast typical of reclaimed material, and the wall is several millimetres thick. It is made in Spain. Size and weight The bowl is 25 cm across in both horizontal directions and 8 cm high, so on a table it takes up about as much room as a dinner plate and does not block the view across it. The shallow well holds a portion of fruit or salad for several people. It weighs 3.6 kg, which is a lot for this size — empty it will not slide about by accident, but full it is easier carried in both hands, and before it goes on a hanging shelf it is worth checking what load that shelf takes. Recycled glass, shaped by hand Each piece is formed individually, so the shade of the glass, the pattern of trapped bubbles and small surface irregularities differ from one bowl to the next. That comes with reclaimed material rather than being a flaw — the bowl you receive will not be identical to the photograph. Washing and heat The maker recommends washing with a mild detergent and drying with a microfibre cloth — streaks show up more on faceted edges than on plain glass. Sudden changes of temperature are to be avoided: rapid cooling or heating can crack the glass, so the bowl is not for hot food, nor for going straight from the fridge under warm water.Show more
