OPAL is a desk lamp built as a turned column on a round, stepped base. A curved arm leaves the column, and a dome shade of white opal glass hangs from its end in a metal ring. Every metal part is finished in patinated brass, and a small ring closes the top of the column. How much desk it takes The lamp is 58.5 cm high, 24.5 cm wide and 35 cm deep. That 35 cm is the figure to compare with the depth of your own desktop: on a 60 cm deep desk the lamp takes up more than half the distance from edge to wall. It weighs 3.4 kg, and nearly all of that sits in the brass column and base, so it is not something you nudge aside with one finger. The shade hangs to the side of the column, over the desktop rather than over the base — the light falls beside the spot where the lamp itself stands. Which bulb to buy No bulb is included. There is one lampholder with an E27 thread, and the manufacturer states a limit of 15 W per holder. That limit settles the choice: the weakest incandescent or halogen bulb in general sale is 25 W, so only an LED source fits this lamp. About 800 lm matches the old 60 W bulb, and for reading most people pick 2700–3000 K. The source is replaceable, so in a few years you change the bulb and not the fitting. The opal glass shade faces downwards: it hides the bulb and throws the light onto the desktop instead of into the eyes of whoever sits opposite. Construction The structure is steel and the shade is glass. Column and base are profiled at several levels, the arm is drawn in a soft curve, and small balls and rings sit at the shade and at the column. It is a classic shape, close to the old study lamps.
