SPENCER is a felt ceiling light — a drum 30 cm across and 19.5 cm deep, sitting flush to the ceiling on a metal mounting plate. The felt is woven, grey inside and out, with a black accent on the trim. Socket E27, max 40 W. Felt — why that material Felt rarely appears in ceiling lighting, and that is the main reason this fitting is worth a look. Unlike glass, metal or plastic, felt absorbs sound rather than reflecting it, and its woven surface has a visible texture that changes with the angle of the light — up close you see the weave, from across the room an even, matt grey. Visually it produces something hard materials cannot: the fitting reads as warm and soft, closer to a textile shade than to a ceiling light. It sits well with timber, wool and plaster, and in a room full of hard surfaces — glass, tiles, concrete — it works as a softening element. The drawback is worth knowing too: felt cannot be wiped with a damp cloth. Dust settles in the texture and comes off with a vacuum and a soft brush, or a light pass with a clothes brush. In a kitchen, where grease settles, it is not the best choice. How it lights The manufacturer describes the light direction as "around (diffuse)". The felt is dense and most of the output leaves through the open bottom, straight down; a soft, muted glow passes through the walls, gently lifting the ceiling around the fitting so that it does not sit against it as a hard dark patch. At 30 cm across and a flat 19.5 cm deep, this is a fitting for a hallway, a corridor, a smaller bedroom or a dressing room — places that need one calm source and where a low ceiling rules out anything hanging. The bulb: E27, up to 40 W, not included Unlike many modern fittings, the 40 W ceiling is high enough that both a classic bulb and an LED will fit — the manufacturer notes the fitting is suitable for LED sources. In practice an 8–10 W E27 LED (800–1000 lm) gives plenty of light here, with negligible heating of the felt. Lucide names a specific recommended source: 49042/05/62 (EAN 5411212491152), so choosing a suitable bulb involves no guesswork. Dimming needs two things — and neither is included The manufacturer lists the fitting as dimmable and adds the phrase "easy to connect to a dimmer (excl.)". It is worth reading literally: the lamp itself contains no electronics, so varying the brightness requires two separately bought things — a bulb sold as dimmable and a dimmer in the installation. Without either, the fitting works, but on and off only.
