RUBEN BLACK is a "spider" pendant: one round ceiling rose from which three independent cables emerge, each ending in an E27 lampholder and an open black wire cage. Everything — frame, cages, cables and rose — is black. Why all three dimensions read "40–180 cm" The manufacturer gives length, width and height as the same 40–180 cm range, and that is not a transcription error. In a spider arrangement the lamp has no fixed shape: the cables hook onto ceiling hooks and run wherever you want them. You can gather them tightly under the rose, stretch them into a line above a bar, or spread them into a triangle over a table — and each time the "length", "width" and "drop" are different. The 40–180 cm range describes how far each of the three shades can travel from the fixing point. That is this lamp's greatest strength and also the one thing to think through before installing: the ceiling hooks are bought separately and their positions have to be planned. Without them the three cables simply hang vertically side by side and the whole idea is lost. Wire cage shades — light and shadow The shades are open geometric cages of metal wire in an angular, many-sided form. They neither shield the bulb nor diffuse the light — they are there as a drawing. Lit, the lamp throws a sharp lattice shadow across the ceiling and walls, tracing the edges of the cages, and that is the effect this kind of fitting is bought for. The consequence is concrete, though: the bulb is fully visible and unshielded. A plain frosted bulb looks accidental here, and a bright clear one will glare when looked at directly. The sensible choice is a decorative filament LED — ideally in amber glass and at modest output, as in the illustrative photograph. No light sources are included. Three E27 sockets, 60 W maximum each The three E27 holders take lamps up to 60 W — a thermal limit that is real with incandescent bulbs and irrelevant with LED: three filaments at 4–6 W each come to little more than a dozen watts. The fitting is not dimmable on its own; to vary the level you need a wall dimmer and dimmable bulbs, both bought separately. Where it works The manufacturer names the living room, a bedroom, a hallway, a kitchen and hospitality venues. It performs best where the three points can be spread horizontally: over a long table, over a kitchen island, along a bar, or in a stairwell where the shades can hang at different heights.
