Carson is an outdoor pendant by Hinkley, distributed by Elstead Lighting. The shade is a sphere of overlapping metal bands in a Vintage Iron finish — a rusty brown that recalls old wrought iron — with a cylinder of clear seeded glass standing at its centre. The manufacturer notes that the Carson pieces are handcrafted. Where to hang it The pendant is rated IP44, meaning it is protected against water splashing from any direction, and the manufacturer lists it for exterior use: under a covered terrace, on a balcony or in a gazebo. Hinkley also names rustic interiors as a second home for it, so it can equally hang over the table in a dining room furnished in that spirit. The sphere measures 25.4 cm across and 27.5 cm high. The overall drop adjusts from 43.3 to 119.3 cm, enough to suit a low canopy as well as a taller gazebo — measure the height at the mounting point and subtract the height at which the bottom of the sphere should sit. The pendant weighs 1.73 kg. The photographs show a ceiling canopy with a short length of chain and a metal rod from which the sphere hangs. Light source Inside is a single E27 lampholder for a bulb of up to 40 W. No bulb is included. As the glass cylinder is clear, the bulb remains visible through the bands of the sphere; the manufacturer recommends a separately sold clear E27 LED lamp at 3000 K, a warm white. The fitting works with dimmable lamps — with a dimmable bulb and a suitable dimmer the light on the terrace can be lowered. It is protection class I, so it has to be connected with a protective earth conductor. Materials and form The construction combines aluminium and steel, and fine air bubbles are visible in the glass of the cylinder. The bands of the sphere cross at different angles and leave wide gaps through which the glass shows. Hinkley describes the form as transitional, bridging classic and contemporary: a plain geometric sphere paired with an aged metal finish.
