Berta Stars is a table lamp for a child's room. The turned wooden base is painted white and the cylindrical shade carries grey stars on a white ground. The lamp stands 50 cm tall with a 25 cm shade, and it is made in the Hellux family joinery. How much room it takes on a surface The widest part is the shade, 25 cm across — compare that figure with the depth of the bedside table or desk the lamp is meant to stand on; the base itself is considerably narrower. At 50 cm the lamp reaches well above the surface, so the light covers the whole of it. The lamp runs on 230 V and the cable leaves the base, so wherever it stands has to be within reach of a socket. Which bulb it takes The fitting has one light point with an E27 thread and accepts bulbs up to 60 W. That is the fitting's ceiling rather than its consumption: Hellux also allows LED bulbs here, where the same brightness needs several times less power. The manufacturer recommends a bulb with a white or neutral light colour — the colours of toys, books and drawings then come out more faithfully than under strongly warm light. The shade is open at the top and the bottom, so the light goes down onto the surface and up towards the ceiling. Build and cleaning The base is wooden and coated with white paint that carries child-safety approvals. Hellux states that every paint and oil used on this lamp is certified and safe both for the child and for the environment. The shade is wiped with a dry or slightly damp cloth — the manufacturer says no marks are left behind.
