ALVIS/AMBITUS 30 is a table lamp 64 cm tall made from two natural materials: a bamboo base and a wide white polycotton shade 36 cm across. It takes an E27 bulb and has a switch on the cable. The number that matters: 15 W maximum This is not a wattage limit copied off a table — it is a constraint to respect. The manufacturer permits sources up to 15 W only, which in practice means LED only. A classic 40 or 60 W bulb will physically screw into the E27 socket but exceeds that limit several times over, and inside an enclosed fabric shade sitting just above a bamboo base its heat has nowhere to go. 15 W in LED is a great deal of light — around 1500 lm, more than an old 100 W bulb. In practice 7–9 W (800–1000 lm) is plenty for a table lamp: behind a wide white shade that gives bright but not dazzling light to read by. A 36 cm shade — measure the surface That is a large shade for a table lamp. 36 cm across will take up a good part of a nightstand and most of a narrow console; the natural home for this lamp is a chest of drawers, a wide side table or a desk. At 64 cm tall the top of the shade sits roughly at the eye level of someone seated — which is exactly where it should be for the light to fall on a book rather than into a face. The white polycotton fabric (a cotton–polyester blend) lets some light through the sides, so the lamp throws a strong pool downwards while gently lifting the room around it. The shade itself glows warm regardless of the colour temperature of the bulb behind it. The bamboo base The base is bamboo — a natural material, so the grain and the shade of colour vary between individual pieces. That is a characteristic, not a fault: two lamps side by side will not be identical. Bamboo is also light, which has a consequence: the whole lamp weighs 1.11 kg under a 36 cm shade, so it is not built to shrug off a knock. In a walkway, or where children or animals run, set it back on the surface. Bamboo copes badly with damp — the lamp is for dry interiors and does not belong in a bathroom or on a terrace. Operation and connection The lamp has a switch on the cable, so it is turned on by hand rather than from the wall — convenient beside a bed or on a desk. The cord is 180 cm long, which gives real freedom in placing it relative to a socket. No bulb is included. Colour, brightness and dimming all depend entirely on the bulb you choose — the lamp itself contains no electronics. For a bedroom take 2700 K, for work 3000–4000 K; if you want to vary the brightness you need a bulb sold as dimmable plus a matching dimmer.
