Glass slats instead of a shade Louvre takes its name from window blinds — and that is exactly what it looks like. The open steel cage, 49.3 cm to a side, carries horizontal clear glass slats on all four faces, set at an angle in bent brackets on the frame. Light from the lamps passes through and refracts at the edges, drawing a distinctive striped pattern across ceiling and walls. It does considerably more than an ordinary shade: the fitting is decorative even when switched off. The gunmetal finish — neither black nor grey Elstead calls the colour painted gunmetal: a dark, lightly wiped grey with visible brush marks through which a cool, silvery sheen breaks. In the detail shots the frame edges read lighter than the flat faces, giving the impression of gently aged metal. As a result the fitting never reads as flat black, and it sits more comfortably beside timber, brick or concrete.
