s.luce Orb is a pendant light built around a single white glass globe 20 cm across. The globe hangs from three metal rods that reach out from the lampholder, and the whole fitting drops from a black ceiling canopy on a black 500 cm suspension. Each glass shade is made by hand, so individual pieces differ in small details. How low it can hang Five metres of suspension is a length meant for spaces an ordinary pendant cannot reach — a stairwell, an entrance hall, a gallery landing, a living room open to the floor above. The suspension is shortened to the length you need, and a mechanism inside the canopy then lets you correct the height by a few centimetres without undoing the fixing. The globe is 20 cm in diameter, which makes it a small light point at the scale of a tall room. Orb is also made in 30, 40 and 50 cm, and the manufacturer expects several to be combined at different heights — the 20 cm globe on its own works better as a single accent than as the main light for a large room. What bulb it takes The holder takes one E27 lamp of up to 40 W on a 230 V supply. No bulb is included, so colour temperature and brightness are yours to choose — decorative warm-light LED lamps suit a glass globe best, because the filament stays visible through the shade. The opening in the globe accepts lamps up to 8.5 cm in diameter; larger decorative bulbs will not fit a globe this size. The fitting can be dimmed, but that needs a dimmable lamp and a dimmer — the luminaire itself carries no control electronics. Build and installation The shade is glass; canopy, rods and suspension are metal in black. The fitting is protection class I, so it has to be connected to wiring with an earth conductor.
