Lucide OLIVIA is a pendant built around a single element: a drum of smoke-grey (fumé) glass, 50 cm in diameter, open at the bottom. The shade hangs on steel cables from a round black ceiling rose 12 cm across. Inside are three E27 lampholders, 40 W each. Smoke glass — how the lamp looks off and lit The glass is tinted through its body to a smoky grey and finished to a high gloss, identically inside and out. Switched off it reads as a dark, faintly mirrored vessel reflecting the room; it is an object in its own right, in daylight too. Switched on, the glass stops being a mirror and turns translucent: the three bulbs show through as soft, warm shapes. The manufacturer classes the light direction as diffuse, all-around — light passes both through the glass and straight down through the open bottom of the shade. That construction has a practical consequence: over a table top you get strong, direct light, while the rest of the room is lifted by a soft glow through the glass. This is precisely the kind of lamp that builds atmosphere at a table rather than lighting a whole room evenly. Choosing the bulbs is part of the design There are three E27 sockets rated at a maximum of 40 W each, and no light sources are included. With a translucent shade the bulb is visible — what goes in changes this lamp more than it would in any fitting with an opaque shade. A plain frosted A60 looks accidental here; a large decorative bulb with a visible filament is the point. Lucide recommends a specific product for this model: 49032/05/62 — a G95 filament LED bulb, 9.5 cm across, 4.9 W, 2200 K, in amber glass, and dimmable. Three of them draw under 15 W in total while filling the inside of the shade the way the designer intended. The 3 × 40 W limit is a thermal one and presents no obstacle at all with LED sources. Dimming requires a separate dimmer The lamp is dimmable but has no control of its own — it is operated from an ordinary wall switch. Adjusting brightness needs two things, both bought separately: a wall dimmer and dimmable bulbs. The manufacturer explicitly recommends connecting OLIVIA to an external dimmer; with three filament LEDs totalling barely a dozen watts, check the minimum load of the dimmer you choose, since many models will not run steadily below 10–20 W. The height is set before installation The adjustment range is 50–158 cm, but the manufacturer notes that height is adjustable before installation — the cables are shortened as it goes up. This is not a rise-and-fall pendant to be moved day to day, so the final height needs thinking through in advance. Over a dining table the usual figure is 70–90 cm from the table top to the bottom edge of the shade: low enough to concentrate the light on the table, high enough not to block the person opposite. At 50 cm across it suits a table from about 90 cm wide, seating four to six. Installation: class I, no plug OLIVIA is a class I fitting, meaning it requires an earth conductor — this is not a plug-in lamp. It is supplied without a plug, for permanent connection at a ceiling outlet; installation materials are included and the mounting plate measures 12 × 12 × 2.5 cm. The IP20 rating restricts it to dry indoor rooms. Voltage 230 V. Allow for the mass: 4.5 kg of glass and metal is no problem in a concrete slab, but in a plasterboard ceiling it needs an anchor reaching the framing or a board fixing of adequate rating. A plain ceiling hook is not enough. Build and catalogue data The shade is glass; the mounting plate and rose are metal, powder-coated black in a matt finish. The shade is the same 50 cm across at top and bottom — a cylinder, not a cone — and 31.5 cm tall. The manufacturer's base colour is Smoke Grey with black as the accent (rose, cables, flex).
