Sabouraud Dextrose Medium contains animal tissue digests (peptones), which provide a nutrient-rich source of amino acids and nitrogenous compounds for the growth of fungi and yeast. Dextrose is the energy and carbon source. The low pH promotes fungal growth, and the addition of chloramphenicol inhibits the growth of the accompanying bacterial flora.
