Once the grease has been washed out of the tie rod end or axial joint, the ball joint will fail within a few thousand kilometers. At the latest, the defective rubber boots or ball joints will be flagged during the vehicle inspection (TÜV). Because replacing the tie rod always requires a new wheel alignment with toe adjustment, it is recommended to replace the entire tie rod depending on its condition. This is characterized by the zero-play ball joint. True to the original design, the Carrera models on the 911 G-model and 964 featured a ball joint with a rubber bushing.
