Once the grease has been washed out of the axial joint or tie rod end, the ball joint will fail within a few thousand kilometers. At the latest, the defective rubber boots or ball joints will be flagged during the vehicle inspection (TÜV). Depending on the Porsche model, the tie rods can consist of two or three main components. These include the axial joint, which is the inner ball joint in front of the steering gear, and the tie rod end at the outer end of the tie rod. Sometimes the axial joint and tie rod end are directly connected, as with the 924/944 and 968. Because replacing the tie rod always requires a new wheel alignment with toe adjustment, it is recommended to replace the entire tie rod depending on its condition. On the 924/944, the tie rods differ in length AND whether they have internal or external threads at the end. If in doubt, you can check your thread type and compare them visually. Another difference: Starting with the 1987 model year, the 944 received the so-called "wide axle."
