Sabouraud Dextrose Medium contains digestion products of animal tissue (peptones), which provide a nutritious source of amino acids and nitrogen compounds for the growth of fungi and yeast. Dextrose is added as an energy and carbon source. The low pH is favorable for fungal growth and inhibits contaminating bacteria from samples.
