GAVIOTA N°2 Las Plumas
GAVIOTA N°2 is a handmade pendant lamp from the Polish studio Las Plumas. The shade is a drum covered in navy velvet, edged top and bottom with multicoloured braids and cords, with dark green fringing and tassels hanging below the lower rim. What it is made of The outer layer is velvet and the frame is black lacquered. The inside of the shade is finished with a glossy gold coating — gold reflects light warmer than a white lining and sends it downwards, under the lamp, instead of scattering it sideways. The fringe is 14 cm long and hangs free below the drum, so the lamp's visible outline is that much longer than the shade itself. Every piece is made by hand in the Las Plumas workshop. How big the shade is The maker produces this model in five diameters, from 20 to 50 cm, with the drum itself between 15 and 31 cm high. The 14 cm of fringe comes on top of that. Compare the diameter with the surface the lamp is to hang over: above a table 80–90 cm wide, a shade of roughly 40 cm keeps the proportions. The cable is 150 cm long and sets the maximum drop. The ceiling rose measures 10 × 3 cm — enough to cover a standard installation box, but not a larger opening in the ceiling. What is in the box and which bulb to buy The lamp arrives complete: shade, lampholder, 150 cm cable and ceiling rose. The holder takes an E27 thread on 230 V, so any E27 bulb fits. The manufacturer does not include one — the light source is bought separately. Because the inside of the shade is gold, a warm bulb of around 2700–3000 K works with the coating rather than against it; a cool-white source will contrast with it.
