DOUBLE 40/30 is a textile shade 40 cm across and 30 cm tall, covered in orange chintz and lined with white PVC. It is made for an E27 fitting and is a component of the Rendl system rather than a complete lamp. This is the shade only — the rest is bought separately The most important thing to know before ordering: the box contains **the shade alone**. To make a working lamp you also need a separately sold **ceiling base** or **pendant set** with an E27 lampholder and cable. Rendl builds its lighting modularly precisely so that the same shade can hang low over a table, mount flush to the ceiling, or move onto a different base when the room changes. Compatible bases include HEX, ELISA, ENZO, ETRE, KOMBIX, LISA and SOLO. Chintz and the white lining Chintz is cotton with a smooth, slightly lustrous finish produced by calendering — hence the characteristic silky surface that catches light differently from matt linen. Orange comes out saturated and warm in this fabric. The inside of the shade is lined in white PVC, and it is the lining that governs the colour of the light coming down: a white lining reflects the beam neutrally, so the light falling on the table is not tinted orange. What glows orange is the shade itself, seen from the side. Dimensions and proportion Forty centimetres across by thirty tall gives a distinctly tall shade rather than a dish — a proportion closer to a cylinder than a cone. That shape channels the light downwards in a narrower spread and shields the lamp more effectively from the side, which is an advantage over a table where people sit below the level of the shade. At 40 cm it suits a table for four, or works as a single accent above a console. Lamp and diffuser The shade takes one E27 lamp of up to 23 W — a limit typical of textile shades, where heat has nowhere to escape. A current E27 LED drawing 9–15 W sits well inside that ceiling and gives 1000–1800 lm. No bulb is supplied. A **PMMA diffuser** (G11867 or G12299) can be added as an option, closing the lower opening of the shade — the lamp is then no longer visible from below and the light becomes more diffuse, at the cost of some flux.
