Coir Doormat Gallery Direct Ikat Ochre/Natural 40x70 cm

The Ikat doormat from Gallery Direct's collection does not pretend to be neutral. A dense lattice of elongated drops is printed onto natural coir - an ikat motif in an ogee arrangement - in ochre, dark brown and off-white. The result is that the mat at the door stops being a technical item and becomes the first colour anyone sees on the threshold. A pattern that forgives dirt The drop repeats across a rhythmic grid, each outline carried in a different shade - from saturated ochre through the warm beige of raw coir to an almost black brown. This is not decoration for its own sake: a multicoloured, small-scale design is far more forgiving of sand, mud and shoe marks than a plain dark or plain light surface. Dirt disappears into the pattern instead of reading as a stain on it. Ochre sits well beside natural materials - a timber threshold, a stone slab, brick. It is warmer and less literal than yellow, which is why it also works against cool grey elevations. Coir on latex - why that combination The pile is woven from coir, the fibre taken from a coconut husk. It is stiff and springy, so it does not flatten underfoot but scrapes the sole - and that is the whole difference between a coir mat and a soft textile one, which tends to spread dirt rather than collect it. The underside is a layer of latex: it stiffens the mat, holds it in place and stops it travelling across a smooth floor every time the door opens. Dimensions and door clearance The mat measures 70 cm along the threshold, 40 cm deep and 1,5 cm thick. That last figure is the one that matters most at purchase: if the mat is going inside and the door opens inwards, there must be at least 2 cm of clearance under the leaf. It is worth measuring the gap before ordering - a door that drags over a mat ruins both the pile and the seal. The 40 x 70 cm format suits a standard single door. For a wider entrance or a double door, the longer version of the same collection makes more sense. Indoors or out The manufacturer allows for both. In practice it is worth remembering that coir absorbs water and dries slowly, so the mat lasts longest under cover - in a porch, on a sheltered veranda, in an entrance hall or just inside the door. Left to full rain and hard sun it will still work, but the printed dyes will fade over time and the pile will grey faster. Care The manufacturer advises vacuuming rather than shaking. Coir is stiff, and beating it hard snaps the fibres at the root, after which the mat starts to shed. A vacuum lifts sand out from between the weave without disturbing the structure of the pile. A heavily soiled mat is best brushed out dry and left to dry completely before it goes back down.
