The residual pressure prevents gas bubbles from forming in the fuel line during hot starts, as the fuel is under pressure and does not boil as quickly. Furthermore, the residual pressure ensures a sufficient fuel supply during cold starts. Thus, the fuel accumulator ensures good engine starting performance. Pressure fluctuations in the system caused by the fuel pump or similar components are also compensated for. A defect will be noticeable through poor starting performance and can be detected using a pressure gauge in the fuel line.
