This is not an ordinary night light. AVA is a lit water column 36 cm tall on a 12.5 × 12.5 cm base: a clear cylinder filled with water in which air bubbles rise and three coloured fish swim along with them. The movement is driven by a pump hidden in the base, and the whole thing is lit by twelve permanently built-in RGB LEDs.Important before first useThe manufacturer sets one condition there is no way around: the column may be filled with distilled water only. Tap water will leave limescale on the walls, and the deposit will in time seize the pump — a part that is not separately replaceable. A bottle of distilled water from a petrol station or car shop costs very little and covers several fillings.Light and controlThe diodes cycle through RGB colours — the shades fade into one another, so the water and the bubbles look different from moment to moment. The whole unit draws just 1.5 W, so it can run all evening without any noticeable effect on the bill, and the housing stays cool. Switching on and off is done with the cord switch included in the box — no reaching behind furniture, no pulling the plug.Where it worksThe manufacturer aims this model primarily at a child's room: the moving fish and shifting colours hold attention for a long time and ease fear of the dark better than a plain lamp does. It looks equally good in a living room or a teenager's room as a decorative object.
