PROFI 3Y strip in COB technology: 4480 diodes on a 5-metre roll (896 LED/m), 24 V, 16 W/m, in the RGBW variant — RGB colours plus separate white diodes at 4000 K. CRI 90, PCB width 12 mm, IP20. COB — why this is not an ordinary strip On a classic SMD strip the diodes are discrete points spaced several millimetres apart. In COB (Chip on Board) the chips are densely packed under a shared phosphor layer, so the strip emits a continuous line with no visible dots. The practical consequences: No dotting inside a profile — even with a clear cover, or in a profile with no cover, individual diodes are not visible. SMD strips need an opal cover for that, which costs some of the light. 896 diodes per metre gives very even light and allows cutting at a finer pitch than SMD strips. It comes into its own where the strip is seen directly: in skirting details, in recesses at eye level, under kitchen cabinets at head height. RGBW is not the same as RGB The strip carries RGB diodes plus separate white diodes at 4000 K. The difference matters: an RGB strip fakes white by mixing red, green and blue — the result is always slightly tinted and has poor colour rendering. Here the white comes from dedicated diodes, which is why it reaches CRI 90 and is usable as working light, not only as decoration. In practice one installation covers two scenarios: everyday white task light under the cabinets, and colour when a mood is wanted. What else you have to buy This is the commonest source of disappointment with LED strip. The roll alone will not work: An RGBW controller is MANDATORY. The manufacturer states it outright: the strip requires a controller to change colours and switch the white on. Without one there is no way to drive four channels. A 24 V driver. At 16 W/m a full 5 m roll draws 80 W — add 20–30% headroom and you need a driver of at least 100 W. A driver specified to the exact figure runs hot and shortens its own life. An aluminium profile. At 16 W/m heat dissipation is not optional. Strip stuck straight onto furniture board runs hotter and loses flux faster. The 3Y series — what sets it apart Extended warranty: 5 years for IP20 versions (3 years for IP65/IP65HS). Lower voltage drop across an installation — relevant on longer runs fed from one end. Every 3Y strip comes with Blue Tape mounting adhesive. A note on the manufacturer's figures LED Labs publishes both a luminous flux of 300 lm/m and a luminous efficacy of 75 lm/W. The two do not reconcile: at 16 W/m, 300 lm/m would be 18.75 lm/W, while 75 lm/W would imply about 1200 lm/m. We reproduce both values exactly as the manufacturer publishes them — on a multi-channel strip the difference probably depends on which channel (or how many at once) the measurement covers, but the datasheet does not say. For a designed installation, measure a sample or confirm the figure with the manufacturer.
