Elstead Flambeau Swirl – a sculpted spiral on a textured black cube Swirl is a table lamp with proportions that cannot be mistaken for anything else: 99 cm tall with a shade 21.6 cm across. That is the silhouette of a buffet lamp — tall, narrow, meant for a chest of drawers, a console or a sideboard, where it marks a vertical rather than lighting a work surface. The base is a black cube with a pronounced, rough texture; above it, on a slender stem, sits a sculpted spiral element in antique white. That element gave the collection its name. Cast resin, steel and parchment The manufacturer lists three materials: steel, resin and parchment. The spiral element and the base are cast resin — a technique that reproduces the texture of stone or raw concrete at a far lower weight than the original (the whole lamp weighs 2.9 kg). Steel forms the load-bearing structure. The shade is made of parchment in antique white: a material with a visible, uneven grain that glows warmly and unevenly once lit, quite unlike smooth fabric. A portable lamp with an inline switch Swirl is a portable fitting powered from a socket — the manufacturer classes its power source as a plug, and the switch sits on the cable. It therefore needs no work on the installation: a socket nearby is enough. The lamp is protection class I, which with a plugged lead means a socket with an earth pin is required. Where to put it A height of 99 cm rules out a desk or a bedside table — this is a lamp for a chest of drawers, a hall console, a dining-room sideboard, or a pair placed symmetrically beside a fireplace or a mirror. With so narrow a shade the light falls mainly up and down in a tight band, so Swirl works as an accent and a piece of the scheme rather than as a room's main light source.
