Winchfield is an Elstead picture light: a half-round shade 44.5 cm long carried on a jointed arm and a rectangular wall plate. The whole fitting is steel in an aged brass finish — a matte, warm yellow metal rather than polished gold. The shade is open along the bottom, so the light falls as a narrow band downwards onto the face of the picture. Size and how far it stands off the wall The fitting measures 44.5 cm wide and 12.7 cm high. The width is the first figure to hold against the picture frame: a shade shorter than the picture leaves the edges darker, a longer one starts throwing light past the frame. It stands 31.8 cm out from the wall — that is how far it reaches into the room, worth checking for a picture hung in a doorway or above a piece of furniture. The arm is jointed in two places, at the wall plate and at the shade, so the angle of the light is set after mounting without drilling again. Which lamps you need to buy Winchfield takes two E14 lamps, each up to 40 W. Lamps are not included, so colour and brightness are your choice; the manufacturer recommends a 4 W LED candle rated 400 lm at 3000 K, warm white, under which the colours in a painting keep their natural tone. The fitting is compatible with dimmable lamps but carries no dimmer of its own. Controlling brightness needs both a lamp marked dimmable and a dimmer in the circuit. Build and installation The body is steel and weighs 1.5 kg — that is the load the wall fixing has to hold. The fitting is Class I, so the installation needs an earth conductor; on older two-core circuits that is something to settle before buying.
