MD-8 ECO COM1 is a STEINEL Professional Line motion detector designed for in-ceiling installation. The round white housing, 109 mm across, sits inside the ceiling with only the lens showing. It is not a luminaire — it is a switch that turns on the lighting wired to it. It covers a circle 8 metres across The passive infrared sensor covers a full 360° and detects movement within a circle 8 m in diameter, roughly 50 m². That suits a large office, a meeting room, a warehouse or a circulation route. Optimum mounting height is 2.8 m within a permitted 2–4 m; the higher it goes the wider the circle but the less sensitive it is to small movements. Where the detection area needs narrowing — the sensor 'sees' the corridor through a door, or a window — plug-in cover caps are included to mask individual segments. This is a MOTION detector, not a presence detector The distinction matters in practice: a motion detector responds to a person moving through a space, not to small gestures at a desk. For a room where somebody sits still at a computer, STEINEL's PD family of presence detectors is the right answer — the MD-8 belongs where people move: passageways, storerooms, plant rooms, washrooms. Hold time is adjustable from 5 seconds to 60 minutes and the switching threshold from 2 to 1000 lux, so the detector can be taught to ignore movement in daylight. What you can connect to it The output switches 2000 W of resistive load, but LED lighting has a separate limit: 500 W for LED lamps above 8 W and a maximum of 50 LED or fluorescent lamps (capacitive load up to 176 µF). That is the number most often overlooked when matching a detector to an LED installation. The sensor has a push-button input, and up to 10 units can be wired in parallel to extend coverage over one circuit. Settings are made by remote control, the Smart Remote app, or potentiometers on the unit — the remote is not included. Installation and operating conditions The housing is plastic, white, Ø 109 × 109 mm and 213 g; the round shape and magnetic holder make seating it in the ceiling straightforward. The rating is IP20 — strictly for dry interiors, not for a bathroom shower zone and not outdoors. Operating temperature runs from -20 to 50 °C.
