The heterotrophic plate count (HPC), formerly known as the standard plate count, is a method for estimating the number of live heterotrophic bacteria in water. This test can provide useful information about water quality, as well as helpful data on the significance of coliform-related test results. HPC is useful in assessing the efficiency of various treatment processes for drinking and swimming pool water and in testing the quality of treated water in a distribution system.
