Glass and E14 — what to watch when changing lamps The E14 cap is smaller than the common E27, so the choice of decorative bulbs is narrower — especially among large filament envelopes. With a glass fitting it is also worth checking that the chosen bulb's envelope fits inside the shade without touching the glass: contact between a hot envelope and glass is the commonest cause of cracks in lamps of this kind.
